Our conversation comes back to me throughout the day. In the shower when I am finally rinsing London from my hair; jumping out from my case as I rummage for a shirt to pull over the fading purple-yellow splotches on my ribs; springing from the fountain in the atrium, where, needing a change of scenery, I have come for my customary afternoon pity session. As an African kid, you live your life at times skating perilously on the edge of your parents’ disappointment. Their love is a fierce and sometimes frightening animal that you sometimes convince yourself you could do without. They have carried the burdens of their own parents and have fought battles the likes of which we, the offspring, cannot begin to comprehend, and we, the offspring, have complained and disappointed them a thousand times anyway. Q died and Ma and Dad accepted my self-inflicted infantilization without complaint. It is because of them that I have been able to choose grief above all else. I have rewarded them by becoming the valedictorian of Avoidance and Poor Choices. Ma is in my house praying in tongues and laundering every item of clothing she can find. Dad is there, too, because where his wife is, he will not be far behind. They await a daughter who has resolved to remain on this island, cherry-picking the kindling she will use to set herself ablaze.
